Asaduddin Owaisi Wins Hyderabad Lok Sabha Seat for Fifth Consecutive Term

Asaduddin Owaisi of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) has retained the Hyderabad Lok Sabha seat for the fifth consecutive time, securing a significant victory with 6.6 lakh votes. His margin of victory over the BJP’s K Madhavi Latha was 3.3 lakh votes, an increase from his 2019 margin of 2.8 lakh votes. This victory underscores Owaisi’s continued stronghold in Hyderabad, despite the BJP’s aggressive campaign efforts.

The Hyderabad constituency was a focal point in Telangana, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and other senior BJP leaders, including Bengaluru South MP Tejashwi Surya and Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, campaigning extensively for Latha. Despite the BJP’s high-profile campaign and substantial resources, Owaisi’s appeal to voters to safeguard Hyderabad’s “peace and tranquillity” resonated strongly. Latha’s controversial actions, including an incident where she checked the identity of burkha-clad women at a polling booth, and her alleged provocative act during a Ram Navami procession, also marked her campaign.

While the BJP did not succeed in Hyderabad, it celebrated a significant achievement by winning eight seats in Telangana, double its previous tally. This included victories in constituencies like Adilabad, Chevella, Mahbubnagar, Malkajgiri, Medak, Karimnagar, Nizamabad, and Secunderabad, marking the party’s best performance in the state to date. Despite the setbacks in Hyderabad, the BJP’s gains elsewhere in Telangana reflect its growing influence in the region.
