Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal Seeks Extension of Interim Bail for Medical Tests

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, presently on interim bail in connection with the excise policy case, has petitioned the Supreme Court for a seven-day extension, citing the need for medical examinations. The request comes as Kejriwal’s health reportedly deteriorated post-arrest, with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) highlighting a significant weight loss of 7 kilograms and elevated ketone levels, raising concerns about a potential underlying medical condition. Kejriwal’s appeal for additional time follows an earlier interim bail granted until June 1 by a Supreme Court bench to enable his participation in the Lok Sabha elections campaign.

Representing Kejriwal, Senior Advocate A M Singhvi emphasized the urgency of the medical tests, underscoring the upcoming election results on June 4. However, the court had previously declined Singhvi’s plea for an extension, reiterating the stipulated surrender date of June 2. The proceedings also witnessed Solicitor General Tushar Mehta objecting to Kejriwal’s reported remarks regarding his return to jail, terming them as undermining the judicial process. Despite Mehta’s objections, the bench reiterated the court’s order and emphasized the importance of adherence to legal directives.

The ongoing legal saga surrounding Kejriwal’s bail has drawn significant attention, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah remarking on the perceived uniqueness of the interim bail decision. However, the bench maintained the impartiality of its order, emphasizing the importance of upholding the rule of law. As Kejriwal awaits the court’s decision on his plea for extended bail, the legal proceedings underscore the delicate balance between judicial directives and political discourse in the nation’s capital.
