Gambhir and Raman Compete for India’s Head Coach Position

Former India opener Gautam Gambhir has emerged as the front-runner for the role of head coach of the men’s national cricket team. Despite the lack of tough competition, another former India opener, WV Raman, is also under consideration. Gambhir’s coaching experience includes mentoring IPL franchises Lucknow Super Giants and Kolkata Knight Riders, while Raman boasts extensive coaching credentials ranging from domestic cricket to IPL and the Indian women’s cricket team.

A source following the developments suggested that the Indian cricket board should consider utilizing the services of both Gambhir and Raman. One proposed solution is to appoint Gambhir as the head coach and Raman as the batting coach, or allow Raman to play a significant role in red-ball cricket. The source emphasized that both coaches could greatly benefit Indian cricket, especially during the upcoming transition period expected in the next 12-15 months.

Gambhir and Raman recently appeared for the first round of interviews for the head coach role, with the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) prepared to rigorously evaluate their suitability. While Gambhir participated virtually, Raman attended the interview in person, highlighting the seriousness of their candidacies as they vie to succeed Rahul Dravid, who will be stepping down in a few weeks.
