Heavy Rainfall Causes Waterlogging and Traffic Chaos in Delhi-NCR

Parts of Delhi-NCR experienced heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning in the early hours of Friday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted more showers throughout the day, with winds reaching speeds of 20-40 km/h. This rain provided relief from the recent heat but led to significant waterlogging in various parts of the national capital, causing inconvenience to commuters.

The heavy rainfall resulted in widespread traffic congestion and waterlogging across the city. Numerous calls were made to traffic police reporting issues of waterlogging, fallen trees, and blocked roads, exacerbating the morning rush hour woes. The forecast for June 28 includes light to moderate rain or thunderstorms, with wind speeds potentially reaching up to 35 km/h, maintaining similar temperatures to the previous day.

In a related incident, a portion of the roof at Terminal-1 of New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) collapsed amid the heavy rains. The collapse injured at least six people and led to the suspension of flight departures from the terminal. The support beams and roof sheet fell, damaging several cars, including taxis, in the pick-up and drop area. A search operation is currently underway to ensure no one else is trapped in the debris.
