Madhya Pradesh Introduces Chapter on Emergency in School Curriculum

In a significant move aimed at educating the youth about a pivotal chapter in India’s history, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav announced the inclusion of a dedicated chapter on the Emergency period in the state’s school curriculum. This decision, unveiled on Wednesday, seeks to enlighten students about the grave implications of the Emergency imposed by the Congress government in 1975. Chief Minister Yadav emphasized that the curriculum will delve into the “excesses and repression” experienced during those tumultuous years, aiming to foster awareness and appreciation for the struggles endured by democracy fighters.

Addressing a gathering commemorating those who opposed the Emergency, Chief Minister Yadav outlined additional measures to honor ‘Loktantra Senanis’ (democracy fighters). These include discounted stays at government accommodations, toll exemptions on highways, and expedited medical support through air ambulances in case of emergencies. Furthermore, financial benefits for their families during funerals will be enhanced, alongside opportunities for employment and entrepreneurial training. The Chief Minister underscored the importance of preserving historical memory and ensuring that future generations understand the significance of upholding democracy.

The 50th anniversary of the Emergency, marked on June 25, 2025, serves as a poignant reminder of a period characterized by political turmoil, censorship, and widespread repression of dissent. Madhya Pradesh’s initiative not only aims to memorialize the sacrifices of those who fought against authoritarianism but also underscores the state’s commitment to promoting democratic values through education and commemoration.
