Mumbai Crime Branch Charges Two Students for Threatening Mukesh Ambani with Extortion Emails

The Mumbai Crime Branch has filed charges against Rajveer Jagatsingh Khant, 20, and Ganesh R Vanparthi, 19, for sending threatening emails to Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani. Khant, a third-year commerce student and son of a Gujarat police head constable, sent multiple emails from October 27 to November 1, 2023, demanding sums ranging from ₹20 crore to ₹400 crore. Vanaparthi, a computer science student from Warangal, independently sent a single email on November 1, demanding ₹500 crore. Both were arrested from Gujarat and Telangana, respectively, in November last year.

The accused used secure email services like Mailfence and ProtonMail and virtual private networks (VPNs) to mask their locations. Khant even challenged authorities with a “Catch Me If You Can” taunt in one of his emails. Despite their efforts to erase evidence by deleting items from their outboxes, the Crime Intelligence Unit (CIU) successfully tracked and apprehended them.

The chargesheet against Khant and Vanaparthi includes extortion, criminal intimidation, and destruction of evidence under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and relevant sections of the IT Act. Although they acted independently, the police clubbed their cases together due to their common target.
