Newly Elected Bihar MP Pappu Yadav Booked for Alleged Extortion

In a recent development, newly elected Member of Parliament from Bihar, Rajesh Ranjan, popularly known as Pappu Yadav, has been booked on allegations of extortion. The incident occurred on June 4th during the counting of votes for the Lok Sabha elections. According to reports, Yadav, who won the Purnea Lok Sabha seat as an independent candidate, allegedly demanded ₹1 crore from a businessman in Bihar’s Purnea district.

The businessman filed a complaint with the police, stating that Yadav had made similar demands in 2021 and 2023 as well. He further alleged that the MP threatened to kill him if the demand was not met and warned of repercussions for the next five years. This incident adds to Yadav’s history of alleged strongarm tactics during his political career spanning over three decades. Despite accusations, Yadav emerged victorious in the Purnea seat by defeating two-term JD(U) MP Santosh Kushwaha by a margin of 23,847 votes.

Prior to his parliamentary tenure, Yadav served as the president of the Jan Adhikar Party, which he merged with the Congress before the general elections. However, opting for an independent candidacy, Yadav contested the polls after the Congress showed reluctance to engage in a “friendly fight” with ally RJD. The investigation into the allegations against Yadav is ongoing as the Bihar MP faces legal scrutiny amidst his political career.
