Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin Urges PM Modi to Exempt State from NEET Exam

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging exemption for the state from the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) and calling for the abolition of the exam at the national level. Stalin reiterated the state’s consistent demand to base admissions to medical colleges on 12th standard marks rather than a separate entrance exam, which he argues imposes unnecessary stress on students. He highlighted that the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly had passed a Bill to this effect, which is awaiting Presidential assent.

In his letter, Stalin raised concerns about irregularities in the recent NEET examination, reinforcing the state government’s opposition to the current selection process. He noted that several other states have started voicing similar concerns, calling for a revision of the selection method for professional courses. The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly unanimously passed a resolution on June 28, 2024, emphasizing the need for the Union Government to approve the Bill exempting Tamil Nadu from NEET and to amend the National Medical Commission Act accordingly.

Stalin also reached out to the Chief Ministers of Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Punjab, Telangana, and West Bengal, urging them to consider passing similar resolutions in their respective state assemblies. He emphasized that NEET disadvantages students from rural areas, undermines school education, and infringes on the state’s right to allocate medical college seats. Stalin’s appeal underscores the growing demand for educational reform in medical admissions across India.
