Union Home Minister Amit Shah Defends New Criminal Laws, Emphasizes Extensive Consultation

Union Home Minister Amit Shah rebutted opposition criticism regarding the implementation of new criminal laws, asserting that they were thoroughly discussed and debated. Shah highlighted that in the history of independent India, these laws have seen unprecedented scrutiny, with his personal attendance at 118 discussion meetings involving 34 members over 30 hours. He emphasized that except for a few political suggestions, all inputs were considered, aiming to embed the criminal justice system in Indian ethos after 77 years of Independence.

Shah addressed concerns about the legislation bypassing parliamentary scrutiny, noting that despite the suspension of over 140 opposition MPs during the process, comprehensive deliberations were conducted. He urged opposition parties to transcend political divides and support these developments, underscoring the government’s openness to renaming the laws amidst regional objections.

Regarding the substantive changes, Shah clarified that the new laws do not grant additional powers to the police and maintain a remand period of 15 days. He outlined plans for a technologically driven judicial system, promising quicker resolution from FIR registration to Supreme Court verdict within three years. Shah also highlighted significant advancements in police modernization, citing 99% computerization of police stations and a shift towards ensuring justice for victims and complainants alongside police rights.
