Delhi Water Minister Atishi Ends Hunger Strike Due to Health Concerns
Delhi Water Minister Atishi ended her hunger strike on Tuesday after her health deteriorated, necessitating hospitalization. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Sanjay Singh stated that Atishi, who had been on an indefinite hunger strike since June 21, was admitted to the emergency ICU at Lok Nayak Hospital after her blood sugar levels dropped dangerously low. Singh announced plans to write to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging the national government to ensure Delhi receives its rightful share of water from Haryana.
The water crisis in Delhi has been exacerbated by extreme heat, leaving residents grappling with severe water shortages. Atishi’s hunger strike aimed to pressurize the Haryana government to increase water supply to Delhi. According to Atishi, Delhi requires 1,005 million gallons per day (MGD) of water, with 613 MGD expected from Haryana. However, she claimed that Haryana had reduced its supply to 513 MGD, affecting nearly 2.8 million people.
The medical director of Lok Nayak Hospital, Dr. Suresh Kumar, confirmed Atishi’s condition had stabilized after her admission to the ICU, despite initial resistance to hospitalization. He reported that Atishi’s blood tests were ongoing, and her sugar levels and ketone presence were being closely monitored. The AAP party and its allies plan to raise the issue of water distribution at the national level.
