PETA Urges UK Government to Reclassify Wool in Footwear Labelling

Animal rights group PETA is calling on the UK’s Secretary of State for Business and Trade, Jonathan Reynolds, to revise current footwear labelling regulations and reclassify wool outside the generic ‘textile’ category. The organisation argues that, unlike plant-based or synthetic materials typically associated with the textile symbol, wool is an animal-derived product and should be labelled accordingly.

PETA contends that the current labelling system is misleading, as it groups wool with non-animal fabrics such as cotton, hemp, or polyester, while leather and sheepskin have clearly defined symbols indicating their animal origin. The group is pushing for a unique symbol for wool to ensure consumers are fully informed about what their products contain. “Every shoe or slipper made with wool comes from an animal who was likely mercilessly beaten and shorn bloody before being slaughtered,” said Kate Werner, senior campaigns manager at PETA.

With wool commonly used in UK footwear, PETA stresses that accurate labelling is crucial for consumers making ethically conscious choices. “Many people choose products based on ethical considerations and environmental concerns, and they deserve transparency,” the group said, urging the government to take immediate action to support informed consumer decisions.
