AAFA Issues New Guide to Protect Fashion Workers from Rising Heat Risks

The American Apparel & Footwear Association (AAFA) has released a comprehensive new guide aimed at safeguarding workers in fashion supply chains from the growing dangers of extreme heat. Published on April 17, 2026, the guide outlines practical steps for apparel, footwear, and travel goods companies to mitigate heat-related risks in manufacturing environments as global temperatures continue to rise.

The guidance comes amid alarming data from the International Labour Organization, which estimates that excessive workplace heat contributes to nearly 18,970 deaths and 22.87 million occupational injuries worldwide. To address this, the AAFA recommends measures such as setting maximum heat thresholds in factories, improving ventilation and cooling infrastructure, adjusting workloads, ensuring access to water and rest breaks, and providing heat-stress education alongside medical monitoring.

Developed in collaboration with brands, manufacturers, academic experts, and NGOs, the guide also emphasizes stronger compliance with regional labour and public health standards, along with improved dialogue between supply chain stakeholders. Updated annually to reflect evolving research, the initiative highlights the growing intersection of climate change and labour conditions, offering valuable insights for fashion students and educators on the importance of sustainability and worker welfare in shaping the industry’s future.
