Actor Jayaram and Kerala Government Extend Support to Distressed Farmer After Cattle Tragedy
In the wake of a heartbreaking incident where a young dairy farmer, Mathew, from Velliyamattom village in Idukki, Kerala, lost 13 of his 20 cows to suspected food poisoning, a wave of support and aid has flooded in from diverse quarters.
The distressing news prompted swift action from the Kerala state ministers, J Chinchu Rani and Roshy Augustine, who personally visited the 15-year-old farmer at his home, extending governmental support and assistance. Additionally, renowned actor Jayaram, known for his profound fondness for animals, stepped forward to offer substantial help. Jayaram visited Mathew’s residence, symbolizing empathy by presenting a cheque of ₹5 lakh, redirecting funds initially allocated for a film event towards assisting the farmer in purchasing new cows and rebuilding his farm. Moreover, he conveyed contributions from actors Mammootty and Prithviraj, totaling ₹3 lakh, to aid Mathew’s family during this trying period.
On the government front, Animal Husbandry Minister Chinchu Rani assured the allocation of five insured cows to Mathew, along with a month’s supply of cattle feed, acknowledging the immediate need for assistance. Furthermore, financial aid of ₹45,000 from the Kerala Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (Milma) was pledged, emphasizing the collective effort to stabilize the distressed farmer’s situation.
This catastrophic loss, caused by suspected poisoning from tapioca skin used as non-conventional cattle feed, left Mathew reeling with an estimated loss of ₹6 lakh. Despite this setback, the farmer, who took charge of the farm at the tender age of 13 following his father’s demise, has shown resilience with the support of his siblings. The surviving cows are under treatment, and efforts to secure high-quality cattle breeds and counsel on enhanced farming methods have been promised by well-wishers, ensuring a hopeful trajectory for Mathew’s farm soon.
