Arundhati Roy Awarded PEN Pinter Prize 2024 for Literary Excellence

Renowned author Arundhati Roy has been honored with the prestigious PEN Pinter Prize 2024 for her exceptional literary contributions. Established in memory of Nobel laureate Harold Pinter, the award recognizes writers who demonstrate a steadfast commitment to addressing societal truths with unwavering intellectual rigor. Roy, celebrated for works such as “The God of Small Things,” was praised by the prize jury for her incisive exploration of injustice and her compelling narrative style.

The award, presented annually by English PEN, underscores Roy’s profound impact on global literature. Reflecting on the honor, English PEN chair Ruth Borthwick lauded Roy’s ability to articulate urgent stories of injustice with both elegance and urgency. Actor Khalid Abdalla, a member of this year’s jury, described Roy as a luminous voice for freedom and justice, whose writings have provided clarity and insight during tumultuous times.

In her acceptance speech, Roy expressed gratitude for the recognition, emphasizing the critical role of writers in confronting contemporary challenges. Despite recent legal challenges in India, where she faces prosecution under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, Roy remains a steadfast advocate for marginalized communities and an unyielding critic of societal norms.

Roy will receive the PEN Pinter Prize 2024 at a ceremony hosted by the British Library on October 10, where she will deliver a keynote address on her literary journey and the enduring relevance of her work in today’s world.
