Ashok Chavan Exits Congress, Likely to Join BJP Ahead of Lok Sabha Polls
In a significant political development that could impact the Congress party’s prospects in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, former Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan has resigned from the Congress. According to news reports, Chavan was discontent with the party’s internal dynamics and is speculated to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). His tenure as the Chief Minister spanned from December 2008 to November 2010, during which he played a pivotal role in Maharashtra’s political landscape.
The news of Chavan’s departure comes on the heels of other notable exits from the Congress. Former Maharashtra minister Baba Siddique recently shifted allegiance to Ajit Pawar’s Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), and last month, Milind Deora announced his resignation, ending his family’s 55-year-long association with the Congress. Deora subsequently joined the Eknath Shinde faction of Shiv Sena, marking another blow to the Congress’s stability in the state.
This series of resignations from seasoned politicians signals a troubling trend for the Congress ahead of the crucial Lok Sabha elections. Ashok Chavan’s move, in particular, has sparked discussions on the shifting political alliances and the potential repercussions for the Congress in Maharashtra. Chavan is reported to have met Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narvekar on February 12 to formalize his resignation, further indicating his imminent association with the BJP. These developments underscore the evolving political dynamics as parties reconfigure their strategies and alliances in the lead-up to the national polls.
