Ashwin Surpasses Kumble to Become Fastest Indian to 500 Test Wickets

In a remarkable feat of cricketing skill, Ravichandran Ashwin has become the fastest Indian bowler to claim 500 Test wickets, overtaking the previous record held by Anil Kumble. Ashwin achieved this milestone during the third Test against England in Rajkot, dismissing England’s Zak Crawley. This landmark achievement came in Ashwin’s 98th match, making him the second-fastest in the world to reach the milestone, trailing only behind Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan who did it in 87 matches.

Ashwin’s journey to this record has been nothing short of spectacular. From his debut in 2011, he has consistently proven his mettle, filling the big shoes left by predecessors like Kumble and Harbhajan Singh. Due to a back injury, his transition from a top-order batter to an off-spinner has been a boon for Indian cricket. With nine five-wicket hauls in his first 16 Tests and becoming the fastest to the 300-wicket club, Ashwin’s prowess has been evident.

Beyond his achievements in Test cricket, Ashwin has also made significant contributions in the shorter formats, with 156 wickets in 116 ODIs and 72 wickets in 65 T20 Internationals. As he continues to be the second-highest wicket-taker for India behind Kumble, Ashwin’s legacy as one of the all-time greats in cricket continues to grow. This milestone is a testament to his skill, dedication, and relentless pursuit of excellence on the cricket field.
