Giving a serious shock to the Congress-led government in Meghalaya, the state which is ruled by the grand old party with a very feeble majority, as many as five legislators of the national party have joined the National People’s Party, which is a partner of the BJP government in Manipur.

Along with the Congress lawmakers, three other lawmakers have also entered into the regional party, which has a strong backing of the saffron leaders.

With this, the total strength of the NPP, which already have two members in the state, would rise to ten.

A senior NPP leader has commended that the mass resignation of Congress MLAs has proved the leaders of the old party have totally failed.

Expressing his happiness, he has also claimed that his party is the only alternative available in the region to those who wish to see a change and good governance.

Former Deputy CM Rowell Lyngdoh is among those Congress leaders who have joined hands with the regional party.

The Congress has not made any official statement regarding the mass resignation which has gifted a serious shock to its Meghalaya state unit.

At present, the mass resignation is not posing any serious threat to the Congress led government in the state as it is still enjoying the support of nine independent MLAs.

The state is going to witness a crucial assembly election mid next year. At that time, the ruling party may face some serious threat if more members of the party choose to follow the move adopted by a section of their leaders.
