Atishi’s Hunger Strike Enters Fourth Day Despite Deteriorating Health

Atishi, Delhi’s Minister of Water, embarked on an indefinite hunger strike four days ago, demanding Haryana release what she asserts is Delhi’s rightful share of water. Despite doctors from Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan (LNJP) Hospital advising her to be admitted due to declining health, Atishi remains resolute in her protest. She cited plummeting blood pressure and sugar levels, alongside dangerously high ketone levels, as health concerns arising from her fast. Atishi’s refusal of hospitalization underscores her determination to continue until Haryana addresses Delhi’s water shortage, affecting millions in the capital.

The water scarcity issue intensified as Delhi’s cabinet ministers gathered at the hunger strike site in Jangpura. They deliberated on strategies to resolve the crisis, including a planned appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for intervention. Atishi’s accusation that Haryana has withheld 100 million gallons per day (MGD) of water crucial for Delhi’s needs has spurred political action. Environment Minister Gopal Rai invited officials to inspect flow meters at water sites, asserting evidence of reduced water flow from Haryana. Amid escalating tensions, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) announced a candlelight march in solidarity with Atishi’s cause.

Delhi Lt Governor VK Saxena reported progress after meeting an AAP delegation, indicating that Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini has pledged to explore options for increasing water supply to Delhi. This development follows heightened public concern over the impact of reduced water availability on Delhi’s residents, affecting daily life across the city. As the standoff continues, political pressure mounts on both state governments to negotiate a resolution to the water allocation dispute, crucial for millions dependent on Haryana’s water resources.
