BJP MP Tejasvi Surya Calls for Action on Bengaluru Water Crisis

Bengaluru, the capital city of Karnataka, is currently facing an acute water crisis, with rapidly depleting groundwater levels and a drought affecting the Cauvery basin. In light of the worsening situation, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Tejasvi Surya has voiced serious concerns and has threatened to organize protests in front of the Vidhana Soudha if the Congress-led state government fails to address the issue promptly. Surya, after meeting with the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) Chairman, Ram Prasath Manohar, to discuss the crisis, warned that the Karnataka BJP leadership would initiate protests if the problem remains unresolved within a week.

Taking to social media, Surya criticized the government for its inaction and lack of preventative measures against the foreseeable water shortage, accusing it of neglect and irresponsibility. He underscored the urgency of the situation for Bengaluru’s residents who are currently struggling with the water scarcity. His statement comes amid growing frustration over the government’s attempts to address the crisis, which he described as “unscientific”.

To mitigate the crisis, Surya has proposed seven measures to the BWSSB, including the provision of treated water for non-potable uses, redistribution of drinking water to stressed areas, recharging aquifers through diversion of treated water to lakes, consultation with geologists for new borewell locations, re-drilling of underperforming borewells, efficient management of water tanker supplies, and the expedited completion of the Cauvery Stage-5 project. These suggestions aim to provide immediate relief to the affected population and improve Bengaluru’s water resilience in the face of severe shortages.
