Delhi Assembly Faces Trust Vote Amid Allegations of Political Poaching
In a significant political development, the Delhi Assembly is set to deliberate on a motion of confidence today, as moved by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. This move comes in the wake of accusations by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for allegedly attempting to “poach” AAP MLAs. The motion is seen as a strategic show of unity and strength by the AAP amidst these allegations. Additionally, ahead of the trust vote, CM Kejriwal appeared before a Delhi court via video conferencing concerning his non-appearance in response to five previous summonses issued by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the liquor policy case, with the court setting the next hearing for March 16.
The backdrop of these events is marked by intense political drama and legal challenges, with the ED accusing Kejriwal of deliberately avoiding compliance with its summonses. This situation has been further complicated by the AAP’s claims of illegal summonses and fears of Kejriwal’s imminent arrest. The party alleges that this is part of a larger plan by the BJP to destabilize the AAP government, citing attempts to bribe AAP MLAs to switch allegiance as evidence of a plot dubbed “Operation Lotus.”
The trust vote in the Delhi Assembly is critical for the AAP, which holds a strong majority with 62 MLAs out of 70. The motion is not only a test of the party’s internal cohesion but also a statement against the BJP’s alleged poaching attempts. This political showdown occurs amidst ongoing investigations by the ED and CBI into the Delhi excise policy, with the AAP facing accusations of financial misconduct. As the city’s political landscape braces for the outcome of the trust vote, the AAP leadership remains defiant, emphasizing solidarity and readiness to confront legal and political challenges head-on.
