Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal Denounces ED’s Allegations in Court Amid Liquor Policy Case Scuffle

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was produced before a Rouse Avenue Court about the controversial Delhi excise policy case, where he refuted claims made by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) dubbing him as the operation’s “kingpin”. Kejriwal, addressing the court in Hindi, criticized the ED’s actions, labeling them as an attempt to tarnish the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) reputation without substantial evidence. The court witnessed Kejriwal’s rare direct address, during which he questioned the sufficiency of four witness statements to justify his arrest and highlighted a financial transaction he alleged was linked to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Outside the court, tensions flared as the Delhi Police detained a man for bringing liquor to the court premises, coinciding with Kejriwal’s appearance. This incident underscored the charged atmosphere surrounding the case, which has garnered significant attention due to its political implications. The AAP leader and his legal team argue that the arrest and the ongoing legal proceedings are politically motivated, aiming to sideline the chief minister and his party.

During the hearing, Kejriwal’s defense contended that he is willing to cooperate with the investigation but objected to the ED’s grounds for seeking an extension of his custodial remand. The chief minister’s forceful court address and the support of senior AAP ministers and family members present at the court underline the political and personal stakes involved. The case continues to evoke strong reactions and debate over the judiciary’s role in political matters and the integrity of political leaders in India.
