Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal Arrested by CBI in Liquor Policy Case, Withdraws Supreme Court Petition
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday after the Rouse Avenue Court permitted the agency to examine him in connection with the alleged liquor policy scam. Following his arrest, Kejriwal withdrew his petition from the Supreme Court that challenged the Delhi High Court’s stay on his bail in the money laundering case. Kejriwal, who was previously arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on March 21, remains lodged in Tihar Jail.
During the trial court hearing, the CBI emphasized the need for Kejriwal’s custody to confront him with crucial documents, claiming he had placed the blame on former Delhi minister Manish Sisodia for the privatization idea. Additionally, the CBI stated that Vijay Nair, AAP’s former communication-in-charge and an accused in the case, worked under Atishi and Saurabh Bhardwaj. The agency argued that Kejriwal had significant involvement in various ministries despite not officially heading any.
Kejriwal’s lawyer, Vikram Chaudhari, contested the CBI’s actions, highlighting the lack of prior notice and access to necessary documents. He expressed grave concern over the CBI’s approach and requested a deferral of the hearing. The CBI, represented by senior advocate DP Singh, maintained that the investigation is the agency’s prerogative and does not require prior notification to the accused, pointing out that only court permission is needed for such actions.
