Expelled MP Mahua Moitra Faces Eviction from Official Residence Amid Controversy

The expulsion of Trinamool Congress’ Mahua Moitra from the Lok Sabha over corruption allegations has triggered further repercussions. Following a scathing Ethics Committee report citing “cash for query” charges against her, the housing committee of the Lok Sabha has taken action to request her evacuation from her official residence. Moitra, who was allotted the house under a special quota by the Urban Development Ministry, now faces eviction proceedings.

The Ethics Committee’s report deemed Moitra’s actions as “highly objectionable, unethical, heinous, and criminal,” prompting the Lok Sabha to vote for her expulsion. Despite opposition demands for her to be allowed to present her perspective, she was barred from addressing the matter within the parliament. Outside the premises, Moitra accused the committee of violating rules, expressing concerns about potential harassment by investigative agencies. In response to her expulsion, she has taken her case to the Supreme Court, challenging the decision.

Moitra stands accused of allegedly receiving bribes, including a substantial amount in cash and “luxury gift items,” from businessman Darshan Hiranandani. He claimed that Moitra solicited favors, including expensive gifts, in exchange for raising critical questions against the government in parliament. However, Moitra vehemently denies these allegations, refuting any involvement in accepting bribes or engaging in unethical practices with Hiranandani.

This development marks a contentious chapter in Moitra’s political career, now entangled in legal battles and facing potential eviction from her official residence amidst the ongoing controversy.
