Hemant Soren Detained by ED in Land Scam Case
In a significant development, a Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court in Ranchi has granted the Enforcement Directorate (ED) five-day custody of former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren. The arrest came on Wednesday night following allegations of money laundering linked to a land scam, marking a dramatic turn of events just after Soren stepped down from his position as the state’s chief minister.
The ED has accused Soren of being a central figure in a series of land-related irregularities in Ranchi, involving a network of brokers and businessmen. These allegations include the creation of fake land deeds through the forgery of records in registrar offices and the subsequent sale of these lands. This action follows Soren’s denial of any wrongdoing, asserting that the accusations are baseless and unrelated to him. He emphasized his innocence, stating, “They did not find any evidence against me.”
This case unfolds as the political landscape in Jharkhand shifts, with JMM leader Champai Soren being elected as the leader of the legislature party and subsequently taking oath as the new Chief Minister. Meanwhile, Hemant Soren remains defiant, attributing his resilience to his heritage and maintaining his lack of involvement in the alleged scam. The situation continues to evolve, with the former chief minister’s legal battles casting a shadow over his political legacy.
