In Wrestling Controversy, New Trouble Over Committee Headed By Mary Kom

Leading wrestlers including Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia tweeted that they were not consulted before the sports ministry formed an Oversight Committee to investigate claims of sexual misconduct against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) officials and to manage the day-to-day operations of the body.

The five-person Oversight Committee, led by boxing legend Mary Kom, will look into the sexual harassment claims made against WFI President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. For the upcoming month, the government-appointed committee will also oversee daily operations at WFI.

The other members of the panel include former badminton player and Mission Olympic Cell member Trupti Murgunde, Olympic medal-winning wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt, ex-TOPS CEO Rajagopalan, and former SAI executive director for teams Radhica Sreeman.”We were assured that we would be consulted before the Oversight Committee was formed. It is very sad that we were not even consulted before the formation of this committee. @narendramodi @AmitShah @ianuragthakur,” Vinesh Phogat wrote in a tweet.

Geeta tweeted, “I request the Honourable Prime Minister of the country, all the sisters and daughters of our country are looking towards you with great hopes and expectations. If we all sisters and daughters do not get justice, then it will be a great misfortune in the history of the country.”

The seven-member committee set up by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to look into the claims of sexual harassment and corruption against the WFI chief includes both May Kom and Yogeshwar.

Along with Yogeshwar Dutt and Mary Kom, the IOA panel also comprises Sahdev Yadav, head of the Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWLF), who is also the IOA treasurer, and archer Dola Banerjee.
