Independent Fashion Retailers Drive Growth, Gain Dominant Market Share

Independent fashion retailers are emerging as a powerful force in the global fashion ecosystem, with their share of total transaction volume rising from 49% to 62% over the past five years, according to data from JOOR. Reflecting this surge, 51% of independent brands reported year-on-year growth within the independent channel—significantly outperforming multi-brand e-commerce platforms (39%) and department stores (31%). Like-for-like data further underscores this trend, showing independent retailers increased orders by 27% between 2020 and 2025, while enterprise retailers saw a 4% decline, with department stores experiencing a sharp 13% drop.

The report highlights a shift in brand priorities, with financial reliability becoming a key consideration. Nearly 49% of brands now cite payment terms as a crucial factor when selecting retail partners, up from 30% last year, signaling growing concerns over timely payments amid industry uncertainties. Additionally, affordability is gaining prominence, with 35% of brands emphasizing lower price points in their selection strategy—up from 25% three years ago. Wholesale continues to dominate as the backbone of the fashion business, accounting for 54% of total sales volume and identified as the most profitable channel by 55% of brands. Notably, 98% of brands are actively seeking to expand their wholesale operations.

From a product and buying perspective, the industry is adapting to evolving market dynamics. While 95% of brands plan to present collections this season, fewer are launching full-scale lines, with a growing shift toward capsule collections and evergreen styles. Meanwhile, hybrid engagement models are gaining traction: 85% of brands will host showroom appointments, and participation in trade shows has risen to 37%. Retailers are also embracing digital transformation, with 43% planning to conduct most appointments virtually and 12% opting for a fully virtual approach. According to Amanda McCormick Bacal of JOOR, independent retailers are proving to be a resilient and strategic pillar, driving growth through curated assortments and diversified pricing strategies.
