Indian and Pakistani Embassies Advise Students to Stay Indoors Amid Violence in Bishkek
The Indian Embassy in Kyrgyzstan has urged Indian students in Bishkek to remain indoors following reports of mob violence targeting international students in the city. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar assured that the ministry is closely monitoring the welfare of students and advised them to stay in contact with the Embassy. Despite the unrest, Jaishankar noted that the situation is reportedly calm.
The violence reportedly began after videos of a confrontation between local students and Egyptian medical students on May 13 went viral. The Pakistan Embassy confirmed attacks on hostels housing students from India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, resulting in minor injuries to some Pakistani students but no fatalities. Over 250 Pakistani students and their families have been contacted to ensure their safety.
In response, the Kyrgyz Ministry of Internal Affairs has heightened security in the capital and is coordinating with law enforcement agencies to maintain order. Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has expressed deep concern, instructing the Pakistani Ambassador to provide necessary assistance and keeping his office in constant touch with the Embassy to monitor the situation.
