Kangana Ranaut Faces Obstacles in Making Film on Bilkis Bano Amidst Studio Rejection
In a recent revelation on social media, Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut expressed her long-standing desire to create a film based on the harrowing story of Bilkis Bano, a survivor of the 2002 Gujarat riots. Ranaut revealed she had diligently researched and developed the script over three years. However, she encountered roadblocks from major studios and OTT platforms. In a tweet, Ranaut stated that Netflix, Prime Video, and other studios cited guidelines against producing what they termed as “politically motivated films.” Furthermore, she claimed JioCinema declined collaboration, allegedly citing her support for a political party, while Zee faced merger issues, leaving her questioning her options.
Responding to a user’s query on social media, which praised her dedication to women empowerment, Ranaut hinted at disillusionment with audience preferences. She criticized the audience for favoring films that depict women as objects and propagate violence against them, expressing disappointment in the reception received by her recent film, “Tejas,” at the box office. Ranaut highlighted her commitment to creating films empowering women and hinted at a potential shift in her career in the future.
Despite Ranaut’s dedication to bringing forth the story of Bilkis Bano, hurdles presented by the industry’s stance on politically inclined narratives and her disheartenment with audience choices cast uncertainties on the project’s realization. The actor’s openness about her struggles sheds light on the challenges faced by filmmakers in navigating content creation amid industry standards and audience preferences.
