Karnataka to Establish 100 Acre Sports City Near Yelahanka

In a significant announcement made to the Karnataka legislative assembly, the Minister for Youth Empowerment and Sports, B Nagendra, revealed plans for the development of a 100-acre ‘sports city’ near Yelahanka, Bangalore. This ambitious project aims to consolidate various sports facilities under one roof, enhancing the sporting infrastructure of the region. The announcement was made in response to a query by BJP MLA S R Vishwanath, highlighting the government’s initiative to cater to the growing demand for comprehensive sports facilities in Bengaluru.

According to Minister Nagendra, the project is set to kick off with an initial allocation of 60 acres of land, already agreed upon by the Revenue Department, with a memorandum submitted for an additional 40 acres. This development comes as a significant boost to the sports community in Karnataka, promising to establish a state-of-the-art sports city in partnership with either private entities or the government itself. The proposal, once the land is officially transferred and approved by the cabinet, aims to bring a variety of sports facilities together, setting a benchmark for the country.

This initiative is especially noteworthy given Bengaluru’s need for a high-standard stadium, as pointed out by Vishwanath, considering the city’s sizable population of 1.5 crore and the limited existing sports arenas, such as the Sree Kanteerava Stadium. The proposed sports city near Yelahanka is expected to be a game-changer, providing an impetus for sports development and potentially making Karnataka a hub for sporting excellence.
