Kerala Judge Receives Increased Security Amid Threats Post PFI Verdict

The Kerala Police have ramped up the security measures for Mavelikkara Additional Sessions Judge-I, V G Sreedevi, in response to online threats following her recent verdict. A senior official confirmed the arrest of one individual, with two others detained for their involvement in issuing threats against the judge. The developments come after Judge Sreedevi handed down a death sentence to 15 members of the now-defunct Popular Front of India (PFI) over the 2021 murder of a local BJP leader.

The court’s decision was met with immediate backlash on social media, where posts disparaging Judge Sreedevi began to circulate. In her ruling, she stated there was “absolute justification” for the capital punishment of the accused, involved in the brutal murder of Sreenivasan, the BJP OBC Morcha state secretary, in Alappuzha district. The murder, which occurred in the presence of his family, was attributed to PFI and SDPI activists, allegedly as retribution for a previous killing.

The Kerala Police’s action underscores the serious nature of the threats and the importance of safeguarding judicial officials. The investigation into the threats is ongoing, with more details expected to be disclosed soon. This case highlights the challenges faced by the judiciary in dealing with high-profile and sensitive cases, and the necessity of ensuring their security against potential reprisals.
