Mamata Banerjee Proposes Mallikarjun Kharge as Potential PM Candidate for Opposition Alliance in 2024 Elections

In a significant development within the Opposition’s INDIA alliance, West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee has put forth the name of Mallikarjun Kharge, the Congress party’s chief, as a potential candidate for the prime ministerial post if the alliance secures victory in the 2024 elections. This proposal surfaced during the recent meeting of INDIA alliance parties in the national capital, where Banerjee emphasized that the decision regarding the prime ministerial candidate should be deferred until after the election results.

The meeting witnessed Banerjee’s assertion that in a democratic coalition like INDIA, comprising numerous parties with diverse perspectives and representing different states, the focus should be on collective unity against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). She emphasized the need to await election outcomes before finalizing the prime ministerial nominee, highlighting the alliance’s commitment to unity and collaboration.

Following Banerjee’s suggestion, Mallikarjun Kharge responded by stating that projecting a prime ministerial candidate should occur after achieving victory. Kharge stressed the importance of securing parliamentary seats before deliberating on the leadership role, highlighting the necessity for the alliance to win a significant number of Members of Parliament (MPs) for such discussions to hold weight.

The meeting, attended by representatives from 28 parties constituting the INDIA alliance, also addressed other critical aspects, including seat-sharing arrangements. Leaders discussed resolving seat allocation disputes in key states like Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Punjab, and Delhi. While the proposal of Kharge as the PM face found no opposition among attendees, the consensus reiterated the stance of deciding on the prime ministerial candidate post-election triumph.

In the wake of this meeting, the primary focus remains on initiating discussions about seat-sharing agreements among the alliance parties, underlining the significance of unity and coordination in the upcoming electoral battle.
