Nayanthara Apologizes as Controversial Film “Annapoorani” Removed from Netflix Over Alleged Religious Sentiment Offense

In a surprising turn of events, popular actor Nayanthara issued a heartfelt apology after her latest film, “Annapoorani,” faced backlash and was promptly removed from Netflix. The controversy arose from allegations that certain scenes in the movie offended religious sentiments, specifically those of the Hindu community. The film, which had a brief one-day stint on the streaming platform following its theatrical release on December 1, faced criticism for supposedly demeaning Lord Ram.

Addressing the accusations, Nayanthara commenced her statement with a respectful ‘Jai Shri Ram’ and expressed regret, stating, “In our sincere attempt to share a positive message, we may have inadvertently caused hurt. We did not expect the removal of a censored film, previously showcased in theatres, from the OTT platform.” The actor, known for her deep faith and frequent temple visits, emphasized that the team’s intention was never to hurt anyone’s sentiments. She extended sincere apologies to those affected, acknowledging the gravity of the issue.

The controversy surrounding “Annapoorani” escalated when an FIR was filed by Ramesh Solanki at the Lokmanya Tilak Marg police station in South Mumbai. Solanki alleged that the film intentionally hurt the religious sentiments of Hindus. In response, Zee Studios, the film’s production house, issued an apology to Vishwa Hindu Parishad and confirmed the film’s removal from the platform until objectionable content was edited out. Nayanthara concluded her statement by clarifying the film’s original intention: to uplift and inspire, not to cause distress, emphasizing her decades-long journey in the film industry guided by spreading positivity and fostering learning. “Annapoorani” narrates the story of an ambitious woman caught between pursuing her passion and adhering to conservative ideals. Nayanthara plays the lead role, supported by a cast including Sathyaraja, Achyuth Kumar, KS Ravikumar, Karthik Kumar, and Renuka. The film is a joint production of Zee Studios, Naad Studios, and Trident Arts.
