Olympic Boxer Vijender Singh Joins BJP, Shifts Allegiance from Congress

In a significant political move, Vijender Singh, India’s first Olympic medallist in boxing, switched his political allegiance from the Congress to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday. Singh, who previously contested the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from the South Delhi constituency on a Congress ticket, is now a part of the BJP, marking a noteworthy shift in his political career.

During the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Singh had entered the political ring as a Congress candidate but was unsuccessful in securing a win. Recently, there had been speculation about his nomination by the Congress for the Mathura constituency, a seat currently held by veteran actor and incumbent MP, Hema Malini. However, with Singh’s latest move to join the BJP, the political dynamics in the region may witness a significant change.

Singh’s transition is seen as a strategic move by the BJP, considering his popularity and influence among the Jat community. Hailing from Haryana, Singh’s influence extends across a significant portion of the Jat-dominated regions in Haryana, western Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan. His joining the BJP is expected to bolster the party’s appeal and support base in these crucial areas ahead of upcoming electoral battles.
