Opposition Leaders Criticize UP Chief Minister Over Alleged BJP Links to IIT Student’s Gang-Rape

In a sharp rebuke against Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Trinamool Congress leader Mahua Moitra condemned the delay in action following the alleged involvement of local BJP leaders in the gang-rape of an IIT-BHU student. Moitra, questioning Adityanath’s inaction, rhetorically asked how much longer it would take to employ the “bulldozer” approach that the CM had previously advocated for dealing with criminals. Sharing images of the accused individuals with Adityanath, Moitra urged swift action.

The incident, which occurred two months ago within the IIT-BHU campus, saw the recent arrest of three men by the Uttar Pradesh police. Opposition parties alleged the involvement of these men, purportedly associated with the BJP’s IT cell. The Congress, in a scathing critique, highlighted the contradiction between the ruling BJP’s slogan ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ (Save daughters, educate daughters) and the reality faced by women, branding the BJP as the “Balatkaari (rapist) Janata Party.”

The criticism extended beyond the alleged perpetrators to the state government’s handling of law and order. Congress leaders, including Mahila Congress chief Netta D’Souza and Uttar Pradesh Congress representative Dolly Sharma, lambasted the Adityanath government. Sharma, pointing fingers at the BJP leadership, referenced Home Minister Amit Shah’s earlier statement about the absence of criminals in Uttar Pradesh, sarcastically stating that they needn’t search with binoculars as the culprits were seated alongside them. Opposition parties have intensified their critique, alleging connections between those arrested in the case and the ruling BJP, casting shadows on the state’s law enforcement and administration.
