Pankaj Tripathi Steps Down as ECI National Icon to Pursue Political Role in Upcoming Film

In a surprising turn of events, acclaimed actor Pankaj Tripathi has voluntarily relinquished his role as the ‘National Icon’ appointed by the Election Commission of India (ECI). The decision comes as Tripathi gears up for his portrayal of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in the upcoming biopic ‘Main Atal Hoon.’ The ECI, in a statement posted on social media, expressed gratitude for Tripathi’s impactful contribution to voter awareness and the Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) initiative since his appointment in October 2022.

Tripathi, known for his versatile roles, has been an integral part of the ECI’s initiatives, but he acknowledged the potential conflict arising from his on-screen political role. In an interview with ANI, the actor revealed his interest in politics, particularly in his home state of Bihar. Reflecting on his past involvement with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) during his college days, Tripathi confessed that he had never contemplated entering politics at that time.

The actor’s upcoming project, ‘Main Atal Hoon,’ directed by Ravi Jadhav, has heightened his interest in politics. Tripathi, who once experienced the thorny path of real-world politics during his college days, emphasized his inclination towards theatre and acting. The film, set to be released on January 19, delves into the life of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, with Tripathi expressing honor in bringing the late Prime Minister’s inspiring story to the silver screen. As Tripathi steps into the shoes of a political giant, his journey from the world of politics to acting takes center stage in this intriguing turn of events.
