PM Modi Congratulates Iran’s New President, Expresses Hope for Stronger Ties

On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Masoud Pezeshkian on his election as Iran’s new President. In a post on X, PM Modi expressed his eagerness to work closely with Pezeshkian to further enhance the warm and long-standing bilateral relationship for the benefit of both nations and the region.

India and Iran have significantly strengthened their partnership in various sectors, particularly connectivity, in recent years. This progress accelerated during the tenure of Iran’s late President Seyyed Ebrahim Raisi, who tragically passed away in a helicopter crash in May, along with eight others, including Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian. As a mark of respect, India observed a day’s state mourning.

Under India’s presidency, Iran joined the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). The two countries have also expedited infrastructure cooperation, especially focusing on the Chabahar project and the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC), a 7,200 km-long multimodal trade route linking Russia with India through Iranian ports.
