PM Modi pays tribute to singer Prafulla Kar, who died at the age of 83, calling a “pioneering contribution to Odia culture”

Prafulla Kar, a lyricist, singer, and music director, died on Sunday night at the age of 83. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences for his death, saying that he would be remembered for his pioneering contributions to Odia culture and music. Kar had been sick for two days and died around 9:30 p.m. from a cardiac arrest.

“Anguished by Shri Prafulla Kar Ji’s passing,” Modi tweeted. His pioneering contribution to Odia culture and music will be remembered. He possessed a multifaceted personality, and his works reflected his creativity. Heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. Om Shanti,” says the speaker.

Kar began singing in college and debuted as a professional singer in the Odia film industry with ‘Shri Shri Patita Pabana’ in 1962. He began his career as a music composer thirteen years later, in 1975, with the film ‘Mamata.’ He composed music for more than 60 Odia and Bengali films. Kar had also appeared in two Odia films, ‘Mukti’ and ‘Thukool,’ in minor roles.

Kar received the Padma Shri award in 2015 for his contribution to the field of arts. In 2004, he was also honoured with the Jayadeva award.
