President Murmu Announces Expanded Health Coverage for Seniors Under Ayushman Bharat

In her address to Parliament on Thursday, President Droupadi Murmu announced the government’s decision to extend Ayushman Bharat health coverage to all individuals over the age of 70. This expansion aims to bridge the significant gap in healthcare coverage for the elderly, as only 20 percent of people over 60 are currently covered under various health schemes, according to recent studies.

The Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme, which already covers 55 crore of the poorest citizens, has recently been extended to grassroots healthcare workers, including ASHA and Anganwadi workers. This initiative is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to provide comprehensive healthcare coverage to vulnerable populations across India.

President Murmu also highlighted the success of the Jan Aushadhi Kendras, a network of generic drug stores offering affordable medication. With 10,000 stores already established, the government has set an ambitious target to open 25,000 stores nationwide, providing significant savings on essential medicines and enhancing healthcare accessibility.
