Rahul Gandhi Appointed Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi has been appointed as the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, marking the first time in a decade that the position will be filled. This announcement came after a key meeting of INDIA bloc leaders and hours ahead of a crucial showdown between the government and the Opposition over the election of the Speaker. As LoP, Gandhi will lead a strong and diverse group against the Modi government, a significant role given the heightened tensions and a more robust Opposition presence in the Lok Sabha.

Congress parliamentary party chairperson Sonia Gandhi informed pro-tem speaker Bhartruhari Mahtab of Rahul Gandhi’s appointment through a letter, as announced by party general secretary KC Venugopal. The Congress, having secured the necessary 56 seats, is now eligible for the prestigious post after a ten-year gap. Gandhi’s new role entails participation in key decisions alongside Prime Minister Narendra Modi, including the selection of high-ranking officials like election commissioners and the Central Bureau of Investigation director.

Gandhi, who has been a Lok Sabha member since 2004, recently won from Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh, a seat historically associated with the Gandhi family. His appointment as LoP also coincides with the Congress Working Committee’s unanimous request for him to take on this leadership role. As the political landscape becomes increasingly contentious, Gandhi has signaled a strong Opposition stance, promising to address significant issues such as the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test controversy with rigorous scrutiny.
