Rahul Gandhi Unanimously Chosen as Leader of Opposition by CWC

The Congress Working Committee (CWC) has unanimously resolved to appoint former party chief Rahul Gandhi as the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha. This decision was made during an extended meeting in Delhi, where Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge urged Gandhi to accept the role, following the committee’s resolution. Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal emphasized that all participants agreed Gandhi is the ideal choice to lead the opposition’s efforts in Parliament.

Gandhi, who represents Wayanad and Raebareli, expressed that he would consider the proposal, with a decision expected within a few days. The CWC resolution praised Gandhi’s pivotal role in the 2024 Lok Sabha campaign, highlighting his Bharat Jodo Yatra and Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra as significant contributions to the party’s success. The resolution also commended his focused campaign, which made constitutional protection a central issue.

Support for Gandhi’s appointment as LoP has been widespread within the party, with leaders like DK Suresh and Vijay Wadettiwar expressing their confidence in his leadership. Shashi Tharoor noted that while Kharge leads the opposition in the Rajya Sabha, it is fitting for Gandhi to assume the same role in the Lok Sabha, ensuring strong and vigilant opposition.
