Smriti Irani Wins, Congress Leaders Ordered To Delete Tweets Against Her

Three leaders of the Congress were given an order today to remove all of their tweets, videos, and retweets accusing Union Minister Smriti Irani’s daughter of operating an illegal bar in Goa within the next 24 hours. In a 2-crore defamation claim brought by Smriti Irani, Jairam Ramesh, Pawan Khera, and Netta D’souza were also required to appear in court on August 18.

The High Court ruled that Twitter would be required to take down the Congress leaders’ tweets if they failed to do so. The judge said “grave injury had been caused to the reputation of the plaintiff” with the tweets. “I am of the prima facie view that slanderous allegations were made against the plaintiff without verifying actual facts,” said Justice Mini Pushkarna.

The summons was verified in a tweet by Jairam Ramesh. “We have been given notice by the Delhi High Court to formally respond to Smriti Irani’s lawsuit. We are eager to deliver the evidence to the judge. We will refute and contest the spin being made by Ms. Irani “Tweeted the Congress member

In a tweet directed at the Congress, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju stated: “One must verify all the facts before making defamatory accusations against those holding high posts or any citizen.”

The Congress has targeted Smriti Irani with claims that her daughter, who is 18 years old, is operating a “illegal bar” in Goa.

The three Congress leaders and their party received a legal notice last week from the Union Minister. She demanded a written, unqualified apology and the immediate retraction of the accusations made against her daughter.

Ms. Irani challenged the opposing party to provide evidence of any wrongdoing after charging that the Congress had “assassinated and publicly mutilated” the character of her daughter. She insisted that her daughter does not own or operate a bar and is a first-year college student. The plaintiff claimed in her lawsuit that the three members of Congress “conspired with other unknown individuals to launch a series of caustic and aggressive personal insults to disparage and defame a small kid of the plaintiff who doesn’t even live in the nation.”
