TJX Companies Goes Fur-Free, Drops Angora and Mohair from Collections
TJX Companies, the parent company of TJ Maxx and TK Maxx, has announced the removal of all natural fur, including angora rabbit fur and mohair derived from angora goats, from its product offerings worldwide. The move comes amid growing scrutiny of animal welfare practices in the fashion industry, particularly following renewed pressure on H&M after investigations into farms certified under the Responsible Mohair Standard revealed alleged cases of animal cruelty. TJX stated that its global operations are now “fur-free,” reinforcing its commitment to ethical sourcing.
In its updated policy, the company clarified that it does not knowingly source products containing angora or mohair, though it acknowledged occasional lapses due to the complexity of its off-price retail model, where goods may be inadvertently supplied. TJX emphasized that any such items are removed promptly once identified. While certain materials like shearling, haircalf, or hide may still appear in limited cases, the retailer reaffirmed its commitment to complying with all applicable animal protection laws and improving oversight in its supply chain.
The decision has been welcomed by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), with the group urging other retailers to adopt similar policies. TJX now joins a growing list of global brands—including Zara, Gap, ASOS, Uniqlo, and Ralph Lauren—that have banned mohair from their collections. Meanwhile, PETA continues to call on H&M to reinstate its earlier ban on mohair, which was introduced in 2018 but reversed in 2020.
