TMC Leader Sheikh Shahjahan Arrested for Alleged Crimes in West Bengal

In a significant development, Trinamool Congress leader Sheikh Shahjahan was arrested on Thursday in North 24 Parganas district, West Bengal, for allegedly torturing villagers and committing sexual atrocities and land grabbing in the Sandeshkhali area. Following his arrest from a hideout in Minakhah, a local court has remanded him to a 10-day police custody. The police had sought 14 days custody, but the court settled for 10 days, with Sheikh scheduled to be produced in court again on March 10, according to his lawyer, Advocate Raja Bhowmick.

The arrest comes in the wake of the Calcutta High Court’s directions earlier this week, allowing for Sheikh’s arrest by the CBI, the Enforcement Directorate (ED), or the West Bengal Police, highlighting the state’s commitment to not shielding culprits. The high court’s directive followed an incident on January 5, where an ED team was attacked by a mob while attempting to raid Sheikh Shahjahan’s house in connection with an alleged ration scam.

West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose welcomed the arrest, marking it as a step towards ending the cycle of violence and criminal dominance in parts of Bengal. He emphasized the need to address the underlying issues contributing to the state’s unrest, suggesting that the Sandeshkhali incident is just the beginning of uncovering deeper problems in the region.
