Violence Erupts in Haldwani Following Demolition Drive; Toll Rises to Five

In a tragic turn of events in Haldwani, Uttarakhand, violence escalated following a demolition drive by the administration, resulting in a toll that rose to five with three critically injured. The unrest began on Thursday after authorities targeted a mosque and a madrasa, allegedly built on Nazool land, leading to widespread protests. According to the District Magistrate, the mob attempted to burn police personnel alive inside a police station. The situation intensified, prompting Chief Minister Pushkar Dhami to issue shoot-on-sight orders amidst the chaos.

Uttarakhand’s DGP, Abhinav Kumar, confirmed the death toll and detailed the police’s forced response in self-defense as the district remained under curfew with a significant police presence. The demolition drive was based on claims that the properties were illegally built on government land, sparking controversy and debates over legal rights and religious sensitivities. Despite a notice issued for the removal of the encroachments, tensions flared when the locals, after seeking legal recourse, were faced with the administration’s decision to proceed with the demolition, citing adherence to legal procedures and previous court rulings.

The administration’s actions, including a postponed demolition after a flag march and the sealing of the unoccupied madrasa, were met with violent opposition. The situation worsened after a legal bid to halt the demolition was declined by the High Court, leading to the tragic events that unfolded. This incident has raised serious questions about the handling of sensitive issues related to land and religious structures, calling for a balanced approach that respects legal frameworks while ensuring community peace and harmony.
