West Bengal Governor Files Defamation Case Against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee

West Bengal Governor C V Ananda Bose has confirmed the filing of a defamation case against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at the Calcutta High Court. Speaking to reporters, Bose stated he would now treat Banerjee as an accused, although maintaining a professional relationship with her as his constitutional colleague. The case is set for a hearing on Wednesday.

The defamation suit follows Banerjee’s remarks last week, where she claimed that women were afraid to visit the Raj Bhavan. These comments were made in the context of a dispute involving two newly elected TMC MLAs, Sayantika Banerjee and Rayat Hossain Sarkar, who preferred taking their oath in the West Bengal Assembly instead of the Raj Bhavan. Banerjee suggested during a press conference at the State Secretariat that there were unsettling activities at Raj Bhavan making women apprehensive.

In response, Governor Bose criticized the Chief Minister for creating “erroneous and slanderous impressions.” The controversy comes on the heels of allegations of sexual harassment against Bose by a contractual woman employee of Raj Bhavan. Bose has dismissed these allegations as “engineered narratives” aimed at thwarting his efforts against corruption and violence in Bengal.
