“What Should I Do”: Badminton Star After Congress MLA’s “Kitchen” Remark

Badminton champion Saina Nehwal strongly condemned Karnataka Congress MLA Shamanur Shivashankarappa’s disparaging remarks towards BJP leader Gayathri Siddeshwara. The 92-year-old Congress MLA suggested that women should confine themselves to the kitchen, prompting Nehwal to emphasize the importance of breaking away from such outdated viewpoints.

In her statement, Nehwal criticized Shivashankarappa’s sexist comment aimed at BJP candidate Gayathri Siddeshwara, expressing disappointment that such remarks would come from a party that claims to empower women. She rhetorically questioned what the Congress party would have preferred her to do when she was winning medals for India on the sports field. Nehwal highlighted the contradiction of honoring female empowerment while simultaneously disrespecting it, citing the passage of the Women’s Reservation Bill under PM Modi’s leadership.

Shivashankarappa, a five-time MLA from Davangere South, faced backlash for his comments. In response, Gayathri Siddeshwara, the BJP candidate for Davangere South, pointed out the significant progress women have made across various professions traditionally dominated by men. She highlighted the diverse roles women now occupy, including those in professions like aviation. Siddeshwara also emphasized the importance of women’s contributions in cooking for their families with love and care.

The BJP lodged a complaint against Shivashankarappa with the Election Commission of India over his remarks.
