YKK Launches Lightweight YZiP® Light Zipper with Enhanced Performance and Sustainability
YKK Corporation has introduced YZiP® Light, a new lightweight aluminum alloy zipper designed specifically for cotton pants, with global sales commencing in late March. The launch expands the company’s zipper portfolio, complementing its flagship YZiP® copper alloy zipper and offering manufacturers greater flexibility for different garment requirements. YZiP® Light delivers a significant weight reduction of approximately 50% compared to the traditional YZiP® zipper used in jeans, making it particularly suitable for lightweight fabrics with a thickness of 0.6 millimeters or less.
The new zipper also enhances functionality, featuring a 15% reduction in sliding resistance and a 26% improvement in lateral pull strength compared to conventional aluminum alloy zippers. A key innovation is the pressed aluminum slider, developed using YKK’s proprietary molding technology that overcomes the challenges of processing aluminum while maintaining durability and aesthetic appeal. The zipper matches the look and performance of the semi-automatic slider used in the original YZiP® line, while also introducing expanded color options such as gold and antique gold.
In addition to performance improvements, YZiP® Light supports sustainability through the use of NATULON® tape made from recycled materials, with approximately 25% of the zipper composed of recycled content by weight. According to Senior Vice President Terry Tsukumo, the product reflects YKK’s commitment to combining innovation, functionality, and environmental responsibility. The company stated it will continue to develop products aligned with evolving market demands and sustainability goals.
