Veteran Freedom Fighter and CPM Leader N Sankaraiah Passes Away at 102
N Sankaraiah, a stalwart in India’s freedom movement and a prominent figure in the Communist Party of India (Marxist), breathed his last at a private hospital in Chennai at the age of 102. Born in Tuticorin, his indomitable spirit and unwavering commitment to India’s independence were evident early on as he faced an 18-month incarceration during the freedom struggle while leading as a student at the American College in Madurai in 1941. Throughout his life, Sankaraiah endured a total of 8 years behind bars, reflecting his relentless pursuit of freedom and justice.
Transitioning from the battleground of independence to the corridors of politics, Sankaraiah served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) on three occasions, leaving an indelible mark on Tamil Nadu’s political landscape. His contributions were recognized by the ruling DMK government, which honored him with the prestigious Thagaisal Thamizhar Award. However, in a symbolic gesture, Sankaraiah chose to return the awarded sum of 10 lakhs to the government, standing firm in his principles.
In a recent development, despite approval from Madurai Kamaraj University’s Senate and Syndicate, Tamil Nadu Governor R N Ravi declined to sign the file recommending an honorary doctorate for Sankaraiah. This move has stirred discussions, raising questions about the recognition of eminent personalities and their contributions to society. Sankaraiah’s legacy as a freedom fighter and political leader remains etched in the annals of India’s history, remembered for his unwavering dedication and sacrifices for the nation’s cause.
