US Delegation Visits Dharamshala to Support Resolve Tibet Act

A high-profile US delegation led by Michael McCaul, Republican Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, arrived in Dharamshala on Tuesday to meet with the Dalai Lama and affirm President Joe Biden’s commitment to signing the ‘Resolve Tibet Act’. This bipartisan visit underscores US support for Tibetan rights amidst ongoing diplomatic tensions with China. The delegation, including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, was received by officials of the Central Tibetan Administration.
The ‘Resolve Tibet Act’, recently passed by Congress, urges Beijing to re-engage with Tibetan leaders for a peaceful resolution regarding Tibet’s governance. McCaul expressed enthusiasm about the meeting with the Dalai Lama, emphasizing the significance of the legislation and confirming President Biden’s intention to sign it into law. The act rejects China’s historical claims over Tibet and calls for an end to disinformation regarding Tibet’s history and institutions.
The seven-member delegation includes prominent figures such as Representatives Mariannette Miller-Meeks, Gregory Meeks, Nicole Malliotakis, Jim McGovern, and Ami Bera. Their visit highlights America’s solidarity with the Tibetan cause, aiming to bolster international advocacy for Tibetan rights. Meanwhile, the Dalai Lama is scheduled to travel to the US for medical treatment, with no engagements planned from June 20 onward until further notice.
