Supreme Court to Hear CBI’s Plea Against Acquittal in Nithari Serial Killings Case
The Supreme Court has agreed to hear pleas filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) challenging the acquittal of Surendra Koli in the infamous 2006 Nithari serial killings case. A bench comprising Justices B R Gavai and K V Viswanathan has sought a response from Koli on separate pleas against the Allahabad High Court’s verdict dated October 16, 2023. The case gained notoriety when the skeletal remains of eight children were discovered from a drain behind a house in Nithari, Noida, sparking a nationwide outcry.
The discovery of additional remains in subsequent searches intensified the investigation, revealing the tragic fate of numerous missing children and young women from the impoverished locality. Within 10 days of the initial discovery, the CBI took over the case, further uncovering disturbing evidence. Despite the high court’s acquittal of Koli, the apex court’s decision to hear the CBI’s pleas, alongside a petition filed by a victim’s father, underscores the ongoing legal battle to deliver justice in one of India’s most chilling criminal cases.
The upcoming hearing in the Supreme Court marks a critical juncture in the quest for justice for the victims of the Nithari killings, highlighting the complexities and challenges in addressing such heinous crimes. As the legal proceedings unfold, the nation awaits the outcome that may potentially provide closure to the families affected by this tragic chapter in Noida’s history.
